Student life in Norwich

Norwich is a fine city. Unique shopping experiences, vibrant nightlife, rich cultural community, Norwich has it all.

Voted in 2014 as one of Britain's top 10 best cities, located between picturesque coastal landscapes and a wealth of countryside, Norwich is a surprisingly bustling city. Always a good place for a night out, the city offers a variety of good-value restaurants, stylish cafe bars, theatres, nightclubs and festivals.

It doesn’t take long to take a bus into the city (check out for bus times and discount tickets), or get on your bike:

The people of Norwich love eating out! Number one in Tripadvisor is the Grosvenor Fish Bar in the Norwich Lanes. Pandora’s Kitchen is famous for it’s breakfasts. Vegan restaurants include The Tipsy Vegan in the Norwich Lanes.
The Eastern Daily Press recently published a list of great places to find comfort food in Norwich 



The saying goes that there is a church for every week of the year and a pub for every day. Favourites include Playhouse, Birdcage, The Wallow, The Plough, The Fat Cat (two-time winner of the Camra National Pub of the Year), Gonzo's Tea Room and the famous Frank’s Bar (one of the Independent's best 50 bars).

Norwich Beer Festival 

The 41st Norwich Beer Festival, organised by the Norwich & Norfolk Branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), will be held at St. Andrew's and Blackfriars' Halls from 22nd to 27th October 2018.

The University of East Anglia's (UEA) first literary festival took place in 1991 and over the last twenty five years has welcomed a host of award-winning authors, journalists, illustrators, scientists, economists, broadcasters and more.

In 2015 Norwich hosted Radio One’s Big Weekend including Foo Fighters, Taylor Swift and Snoop Dogg (in a Norwich City football shirt). Whilst it was awesome to welcome some of the world’s biggest artists to campus, we’re even prouder of our city venues and the growing music scene.

  1. Norwich Arts Centre 
    2015 NME best small venue, Norwich Arts Centre is firmly established in the heart of Norwich’s cultural community as the leading contemporary arts venue. Delivering a daily programme of live music, theatre, dance, live art, visual art and spoken word.

  2. The Waterfront 
    Live music and alternative nightclub in Norwich city centre, run by the UEA Students Union.

  3. The Nick Rayns LCR
    Named after the former UEA entertainments manager, Nick Rayns who for decades brought incredible events to campus and the waterfront. Dating back over 30 years, the LCR has played host to anyone and everyone over the years. Over the years acts to grace the stage are U2, Manic Street Preachers, Kasabian, Faithless, Stereophonics, Duran Duran, Eurythmics, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Iron Maiden, Coldplay.

  4. Open
    The former Barclays Bank in the city centre has been converted into a not-for-profit gig venue with a growing reputation in hosting folk and jazz events. Visitors in autumn 2016 include The Low Anthem, The Divine Comedy and Seth Wakeman

  5. UEA Music Centre

    UEA Music Centre is open to everyone, no matter what degree programme you are studying or how much experience you have. Based in the heart campus it offers a focal point for music on campus, in the City of Norwich and in the wider community. Staffed by a dedicated Director of Music and Music Administrator, the Music Centre provides a vibrant meeting place for musicians, runs UEA’s flourishing choir and orchestra, hosts practice and rehearsal spaces and is open to all.

If you’re hoping to get active when you arrive at UEA, you should think about joining one of the UEA sports clubs and take advantage of student membership at the UEA sportspark. Here’s some other sporting highlights on offer in Norwich: 

  1. Norwich Park Run
    Free weekly 9am 5k at Eaton Park every Saturday. 5 minutes from campus.

    Dry slope Skiing, Snowboarding and Tubing for beginners and improvers on the outskirts of Norwich.

  3. Norwich City FC
    Owned by Delia Smith, and sadly relegated from the English Premier League this year, but looking forward to another exciting season in the championship. Carrow Road is often sold out and has an incredible atmosphere - don’t forget to learn ‘On the Ball City’ before you go.

  4. Sportspark
    There is a 50m Olympic size pool, 12 badminton courts, an 8-lane athletics track, six floodlit hockey and soccer pitches as well as a state-of-the-art gym. Add to that the 10x28m climbing wall, 5 squash courts, newly-equipped gymnastics centre, 6 tennis courts and 40 acres of playing fields. All on your campus.

Once you’ve found your way around Norwich, you might like to taking a bus, train or bike (if you’re feeling energetic) to visit the rest of our beautiful county. You could try boating on the Broads, build a sandcastle on one of our unspoilt beaches, or swing through the trees of Thetford Forest
