March 30 – April 3 2020: Music Group holiday - Bournemouth

Earlier this year Alan and Marianne Coddington and Rosemary and I went to the Queens Hotel, Bournemouth for a four night holiday with musical events every day. The highlight was a performance by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (BSO) on the middle day. On other days there were recitals at the hotel by a string quartet, and by an opera tenor accompanied by a pianist. In the free time we used our bus passes to have a walk along the beach from Sandbanks, and a visit to Christchurch Priory for an organ recital. We travelled by train and really enjoyed the whole holiday.

In 2020, the four of us are planning to go on the equivalent holiday from 30th March to 3rd April, staying at the Queens Hotel. The BSO programme is all Beethoven – the Egmont Overture, Symphony No 4 and Piano Concerto No 5 ‘Emperor’. The quartet is the Myriad String Quartet, the piano soloist is Sunwook Kim, and the visit is to the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and Museum.

If you are interested in coming with us, please let John Johnson (j.johnson@uea.ac.uk) know by the end of October. The price for dinner, bed and breakfast is £429 per person, which includes all music and the outing. There are a limited number of single rooms available at this price.

20-24 July 2020: Summer holiday 2020 – HF Discovery Tour at Abingworth

Following the successful Discovery Tour at Bourton-on-the-Water and the general approval of the HF experience, I have chosen Abingworth, by the South Downs for the “non-walking” holiday for 2020. I have a set of rooms held for 20th to 24th July 2020.

Situated close to the village of Thakeham and nestled at the foot of the South Downs, HF Abingworth Hall is ideally located for a holiday with some excursions near the sea. A peaceful ambiance and excellent facilities make it a relaxing place to stay. It offers great oportunities for short or long strolls in the beautiful surrounding meadows.

The itinerary for 2020 Discovery Tour is not decided yet, but to give a flavour, here are two days outings from 2019:

(1) Littlehampton, where you can chose to take a walk alongside the River Arun on a smart new promenade to the sea. We then visit the delightful Highdown Gardens, built into a chalk quarry. In the afternoon, we visit Lancing College which contains a magnificent chapel.

(2) We visit the delightful village of Bosham on Chichester Harbour, which appears on the Bayeux Tapestry and is also associated with King Cnut. We then spend some time in Chichester where you can choose to visit the cathedral, explore the town, walk on the town wall or even indulge in a little ‘retail therapy’. The day finishes at West Dean with the opportunity to enjoy the walled garden or take a walk on the Monarch’s Way.

The cost of the holiday is £499 per person for dinner, bed, breakfast and packed lunch. All travel on the Discovery Tour is included in this price, but there will be some entry fees to be paid. The cost of the coach to get there and back from Norwich will depend on the number of participants.

If you would like to come on this holiday, please send me an email or phone 01603 456465 by Saturday 12th October, and send or give me a cheque payable to UEA Retirement Association for the non-refundable deposit of £75 per person. As single rooms are limited, if you are willing to share a twin room please tell me.

5-9 October 2020: Walking Holiday at Sedburgh, Yorkshire Dales

Our Walking Holiday in 2020 will be at Sedburgh in the Western Yorkshire Dales. This is a Monday to Friday holiday with walks on the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. On this holiday we will have fully guided walks with HF Leaders and they will provide transport to and from the walks. HF Holidays is at Thorns Hall, Sedburgh, LA10 5LE. It’s a Tudor country house which is a short stroll from the heart of Sedburgh. The hall dates from 1535 and has a history and folklore to match. HF have modernised it considerably!

More details at: www.hfholidays.co.uk/holidays-and-tours/guided-walking-sedbergh-4

We have booked the whole house. There is no programme of non-walking trips planned. Initially, preference will be given to those wanting guided walking.

The cost of the walking holiday is currently quoted at £375 per person. All rooms are en suite. A deposit of £75 is required before the end of November 2019. The price includes bed, breakfast, packed lunch for walks and an evening meal.

The house has room for about 32 guests and there are 9 single rooms. There is no single supplement but single rooms are always in short supply, so if you can share a twin, please say so (and with whom!)

We will offer a coach if enough people want to travel that way. The road journey is about 250 miles and about 5 hours driving – according to Google. The cost of the coach from Norwich will be about £75, but only if enough people go on the coach. This cost will be added to the holiday cost above.

Please do ensure you have appropriate travel insurance. HF holidays no longer offer insurance, but most people find an annual policy better value. If you need to cancel for any reason, you will lose your deposit, unless we can transfer the booking to another member of UEARA. The final balance will be due at the beginning of August 2020 and is not refundable.
