Frequently asked questions for international students Frequently asked questions for international students

Am I guaranteed a place in a class?

No – demand for these classes is extremely high so unfortunately we cannot guarantee you a place. After registration closes, you will be sent an email to inform you if your request to register for a class has been successful. If you do not get a place, we will put you on a waiting list and contact you if a place becomes available. Please do not attend classes if you are on a waiting list.

How do I register for classes on the English Language Support Programme?

Read our how to register page for instructions on how to register.

When and where do classes take place?

The English Language Support Programme will commence in Spring semester 2018.

Click here to view information about the different classes which are available on the English Language Support Programme.

Where can I get details about what will be taught?

Full syllabuses for the English Language Support Programme (ELSP) are available on the ELSP homepage.

How many classes can I register for?

You can ask to register for as many classes on the English Language Support Programme as you like, though please check your School timetable first so you are sure you would be able to attend the classes you want to register for.

Availability is limited, however, so note that a request to attend a class does not automatically mean that you will be registered for it.

Once I've registered, are classes on the English Language Support Programme optional or compulsory?

Classes are optional. However, because availability is limited, we may have to give your place in the class to another student if you miss classes in two consecutive weeks without notifying us.

What happens if I don't attend?

UEA realizes that students may be unable to attend classes on the English Language Support Programme because of pressure of other work, illness or other reasons. However, because availability is limited, we may have to give your place in the class to another student if you miss classes in two consecutive weeks without notifying us.

How many students are in each class?

The maximum class size is 24.

The class I want to register for is full. What should I do?

There are waiting lists for classes which are full. Please send an email to elsp@uea.ac.uk with your name, student number, school of study and your class choices and we will contact you when a place becomes available in the class you have requested to attend.

There are many classes in each component of the English Language Support Programme each week. For example, there are three Academic Writing classes for undergraduates each week. Does the teacher do different things in each class or is the same lesson repeated?

The same lesson is repeated. This is because students across the University have different timetables and we want to enable as many students as possible to attend classes on the English Language Support Programme.

There are already English support classes in my School. Can I also register for the English Language Support Programme?

Yes, but as there is limited availability we may have to give priority to students who do not have English support classes in their School.

How much do classes on the English Language Support Programme cost?

Nothing, they're free

Can my husband/wife/children attend classes on the English Language Support Programme?

No. The English Language Support Programme exists to help students develop the language skills necessary for successful academic study. It is not a ‘general English' programme. For this reason the classes are open only to registered UEA students.
