Conversation Club Coordinators

Patricia

Hi, I’m Patricia - a final year Law student. I’m originally from the Philippines but I grew up in Thailand before moving to the UK for my bachelors degree. I am the President of UEA’s Southeast Asia Society (everyone is welcome to join ;) ) which actually won the “Most Internationalised Society” award last May, a member of several other societies (such as Law Society, Red Cross, etc), and was an avid volunteer of Conversation Club.

My interest in international schemes, specifically the Conversation Club, developed from growing up as a third-culture kid. I’ve been a foreigner my entire life so I know what it’s like settling into a new area, making new friends, adapting to different cultures, etc. I grew up in an international environment, having multi-cultural friends from all over the world, so I also know how to approach people from different backgrounds and help them get comfortable.

People tell me I’m quite charismatic, friendly, hyper, and very approachable. I enjoy organising events, working with a group of multinationals, and overall having fun. With my background, skills and co-coordinator (Marta), I believe we can definitely help make your UEA experience better whilst developing your conversational skills at the same time. Can't wait to meet you all!!!!!

Marta

Hi! My name is Marta, I’m currently a final year Marketing student and I’m thrilled to be a part of Conversation Club this year. I was born in Poland but grew up in the U.S., and then of course moved to the U.K. to attend UEA! On campus, you’ll most likely find me in the music centre playing piano or at Unio drinking tea with a Language Buddy.

During my first year at UEA, my friend group consisted of both British and international students but I noticed this wasn’t usually the case for a lot of people. When I joined ISAT as a student representative I knew this was something I wanted to help change- the integration of our diverse student group. I still remember as a child what it was like to deal with the overwhelming experiences that come with moving to a new place, and related to people with similar stories as I was growing up (Patricia and I have this in common).

I’ve worked with young children on improving their English (and Polish) language abilities, and in other instances have worked with people from all walks of life and different cultures, and am passionate about continuing to learn people’s stories.

We as coordinators are extremely excited to work hard at making Conversation Club a welcoming environment for everyone, and we can’t wait to see you there!

Both Marta and Patricia have experience working with others on their language and look forward to sharing their experiences with you to help develop your conversational skills and confidence in using English.

In the past the Conversation Club has also organised additional social events, including a trip to London to see the Chinese New Year festivities and a BBQ on the lake. All weekly sessions and other events are available through the Facebook Group so join now to find out more.
