TIMESCALES FOR COMPLYING TO THE REF OPEN ACCESS REQUIREMENTS TIMESCALES FOR COMPLYING TO THE REF OPEN ACCESS REQUIREMENTS

One of the interesting features of the open access requirements for the next REF is that it has set timescales for compliance.  As well as the common maximum allowed embargo periods imposed by publishers before articles can be made public through a repository, journal articles and conference proceedings need to be uploaded to a repository within 3 months of being accepted for publication in order to be eligible for the REF.  If this is not done, that output will not be eligible for the next REF. Authors must not wait until publication, or until an embargo period has ended, to upload their articles.

UEA authors should act in line with this requirement with immediate effect, to ensure that no outputs are missed, by uploading their accepted manuscript version of their article to PURE.  We recommend that this is done as soon after acceptance as possible.

Authors should also be aware of the maximum embargo periods, which are 12 months for science, medicine and maths and 24 months for arts, humanities and social sciences.  If the embargo period of your chosen journal is longer than this, please contact the open access officer in RIN for advice, as exceptions to this requirement may apply.
