Sandpit session: Interdisciplinary research on 'Living & Working in a Digital Age'

Sandpit session to discuss 2 funding calls for interdisciplinary research under the theme of “LIVING AND WORKING IN A DIGITAL AGE”

Friday 4 March, 1:30-2:30pm, ARTS 01.04

This is intended as a brainstorming session to:

  • identify any current research in this broad area
  • gauge interest within UEA for responses to either of these calls
  • assess the possibility of a joint Eastern ARC response.

Detailed calls to be issued: March 2016
Deadlines: October 2016

Please email reneast@uea.ac.uk to reserve a place.

Call 1: ESRC - Centres and Large Grants

The ESRC is currently considering the areas below for future funding under this call (tbc in March):

  • New ways of living and working in the digital age
  • Mental health
  • Understanding the macro-economy
  • Productivity.

“Any competition will continue to focus on ambitious and innovative research with high impact. […] it takes time to prepare such bids, particularly as Centres and Large Grants are typically inter-disciplinary and international in their scope and involve inter-institutional collaboration. For this reason [the ESRC] intend to extend the period available for the preparation of bids and it is likely that the closing date for applications will not be until October 2016.

Call 2: Trans-Atlantic Platform – Digging into Data Challenge

The Challenge will support research projects that explore and apply new ‘big data’ sources and methodologies to address questions in the social sciences and humanities. The funding opportunity is open to projects that address any research question in humanities and/or social sciences disciplines by using new, large-scale, digital data analysis techniques. All projects must show how these techniques can lead to new theoretical insights. Proposed projects can use any data source.”

The programme supports collaborative research teams from:

  • Europe (UK, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal [tbc]
  • North American (Canada, Mexico, the US)
  • South America (Brazil, Argentina).
