The Eastern ARC Consortium (Universities of East Anglia, Essex and Kent) has recently been awarded £4.7 million for the Enabling Innovation: Research to Application (EIRA) initiative by Research England through the Connecting Capability Fund to establish a network that will support business innovation in Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and Kent. The EIRA project supports innovation in three areas - artificial intelligence, biotech and digital creative. There are a range of majority-funded grants available to UEA researchers and businesses active in the New Anglia and South East LEP interested in working together.

Examples of funding available:


  • Innovation vouchers - up to £6k for companies to access consultancy support from experts within UEA and partner institutions
  • R&D grants - for projects between £20k-50k for companies to undertake collaborative research and development activity with experts from UEA and partner institutions
  • Proof of concept fund (now closed) - grants between £10k-40k to help companies understand the market for their service, research or technology, by drawing on expertise within UEA and partner institutions
  • Start-up micro finance - up to £3k for start-ups that are being developed at UEA and partner institutions to enable business ideas to be tested
  • Innovation internships - provision of up to 12 weeks of support from a graduate programme linked to specialist expertise

Friday 22 March 2019  (for 5 April submission)

Friday 31 May 2019  (for 14 June submission)

Friday 2 August 2019  (for 16 August submission)

Friday 4 October 2019  (for 18 October submission)

Friday 22 November 2019  (for 6 December submission)


Applications for innovation vouchers, internships and start-up microfinance will be on a rolling basis, applications can be submitted at any time.


UEA researchers and businesses active in the New Anglia LEP/South East LEP areas interested in working together will be eligible to apply.
