When and how do I print a Council Tax Certificate?

Under what circumstances during my course do I become ineligible for Council Tax exemption?

You cease to be eligible for a discount or exemption if you withdraw from your course or change from full-time to part-time study. If you change to a shorter course or have a reduction to your postgraduate period of study you may also become ineligible. Please inform your local Council Tax Office in all of the above circumstances.

Am I entitled to Council Tax exemption if I intercalate?

Students who intercalate or interrupt their period of study and later return to their full-time course, will not be liable to pay Council Tax for the period of interruption. However, students who do not return to their full-time course following a period of intercalation or interruption will cease to be eligible for student status for Council Tax from the date on which they commenced their period of intercalation or interruption. The local Council Tax Office may seek to reclaim any tax owed.

What do I do with my Council Tax Certificate?

Students living outside of University residences should register with their local Council for Council Tax purposes providing their property address. For most students this is likely to be Norwich City Council, whose contact details are: Revenue Services, City Hall, Norwich, NR2 1WJ. The main telephone number is 0344 9803333 and further information is available on their website at http://www.norwich.gov.uk.

Can a friend, parent or landlord/letting agent obtain a Council Tax Certificate on my behalf?

In accordance with the Data Protection Act information or documentation cannot be obtained by a friend, member of the family or landlord/letting agency without a student's consent. Please print off your council tax certificate yourself in these instances.

What happens when my course finishes?

If you remain living outside of UEA residences after the end date stated on your Council Tax Certificate you may no longer be eligible for Council Tax exemption. Please note you will also be liable to pay Council Tax after your course end date regardless of your graduation date. Please check with your local Council Tax Office.

If I have to pay Council Tax for a period at the end of my course do I have to pay the whole bill?

You should only have to pay for the period when you are not a student. However, speak to your local Council Tax Office as the bill is for the house. If you live with others who are still exempt from Council Tax you may be responsible for the whole bill.
