The School of Mathematics at UEA is a flourishing department committed to excellence in teaching and research. Since the National Student Survey started in 2005, we have consistently featured in the top six mathematics departments in the country. In the most recent National Student Survey, the School achieved an overall student satisfaction of 100% for BSc Mathematics.
The Schools of Study at UEA teach thousands of undergraduate and postgraduate students each year across the four faculties of our campus in Norwich.
We’re looking forward to welcoming you to Mathematics.
If you haven’t already, check out our School pages on the UEA website.
Once you have registered online you will also need to attend a registration event (unless you are an undergraduate home student living in UEA accommodation, since you are registered automatically when you pick up your room keys).
Welcome to the School of Mathematics, or MTH as it is known. We are very pleased you have decided to study with us. My colleagues and I look forward to working with you, ensuring that you have all the support you need to be successful.
MTH is a School with high academic standards and we are proud of the achievements of our graduates. Acquiring mathematical understanding is not a passive activity: rather than teaching you mathematics, we are going to help you to learn it so your active participation throughout is essential for success. This includes telling us how things are going so that we can make your learning experience even better.
The students who gain the most from their time at UEA not only work hard but also get involved with some of the myriad activities on offer at the University. It is going to be a busy time and we hope you will look back fondly on your time at UEA as one of the very best times of your life.
A huge amount of information will be given to you, including that on this website about your induction programme. Try to look over all of it, and above all ask questions if you are confused – the staff and students in MTH are friendly and approachable, and will be happy to answer.
I hope you will find your time here enjoyable, challenging and rewarding and look forward to meeting you in the next few weeks.
Professor David Stevens
Head of School
You can find a mix of welcome, induction and academic events that we have planned for you by downloading the Welcome Week programme from the link below in the ‘Induction Materials’ section. There are UEA wide events for all students as well as our School events and activities. You will find out more about all of these when you arrive.
Once you receive an email confirming your place, follow the links to register online and set up your IT account, UEA username and password. You will need this to be able to access your personalised timetable information and gain access to the SCI Student Zone. This is our area for all Science students to find common and School only information. It is an important reference area not only in your first few weeks but during all your time here at UEA.
Follow these instructions once you have registered online:
- Go to portal.uea.ac.uk
- Select BLACKBOARD from the 3 orange buttons towards the top of the screen
- Type in your UEA username and password, and select Sign In
- At the top right of the screen select SCI Student Zone
The School of Mathematics Information Zone has a tab called "Start of Year" with information that you will find helpful in your first few weeks at UEA. If there is any essential or recommended reading for your course, of if you have optional module choices to make in your first year, this is where you will find further information about that before you arrive. Do browse all of the other tabs, as well as the all students’ area, as they are full of useful information too.
More information on registering online is available here
