Library Search is your main way into books and articles held by the Library, with Find Databases giving you access to further specialist resources to explore. This current subject guide provides a selection of key Databases and other resources likely to be of use as you undertake your studies.

 

KEY RESOURCES FOR DRAMA KEY RESOURCES FOR DRAMA

There are tens of thousands of books and journal articles related to drama available via Library Search. Here are some other resources you may find useful.

Drama Online
Contains the full text of more than 2,000 plays from Greek drama to the present day, along with information about playwrights and genres. Note that some of the content on the site is not included in our subscription (video and audio content and some eBooks). These are marked with a padlock.

Digital Theatre +
Contains streaming video of more than 430 full-length theatre and music productions and 300 interviews with industry professionals, along with 10,500 pages of learning resources.

Literary Encyclopedia
An online encyclopedia containing a lot of information about drama and other literary forms. Includes biographies, timelines and suggestions for further reading.

Literature Online (LION)
A core resource for those studying literature, LION includes primary texts, biographies, literary criticism and journal articles. It contains more than 5,000 plays, although the majority of these are pre-1900.

Box of Broadcasts (BoB)
A TV and radio archive and recording service for UK higher and further education institutions. You can access over a million programmes broadcast over the past two decades, drawn from 60+ TV and radio channels, including drama series, documentaries and feature films. Note that in addition to your UEA log-in you will need to create a personal account on BoB.

Nexis
A major newspaper database, containing the text of millions of newspaper and magazine articles from around the world. A valuable source of interviews and reviews.

Credo Reference
Search across hundreds of encyclopedias and other reference books.

Oxford Reference Online 
Search across encyclopedias, dictionaries and other language resources.

Oxford English Dictionary (OED)
Major dictionary of the English language, especially useful in charting the development of words and their different meanings over time.

Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (ODNB)
Biographies of thousands of individuals from across the history of the British Isles. Note that it only includes those who have died.

Cite them Right
A referencing tool that provides assistance in how to reference in a range of different styles (including Harvard, APA, MHRA and MLA).

 

Scholarly Overviews
Expert overview of key subjects

Oxford Handbooks Online (OHO)
Updated regularly and intended to provide a critical survey of the current state of scholarship in a subject area. Includes several volumes relating to theatre and literature.

Cambridge Companions Online
Scholarly introductions to subjects, including several volumes relating to theatre genres or individual playwrights.

Cambridge Histories Online
Historical overviews of regions or themes, including several volumes relating to literature and the theatre.

 

Bibliographies

Modern Languages Association (MLA) Bibliography
A core resource for literature students, the MLA Bibliography includes journal articles, books and dissertations related to literature, language and linguistics, folklore, literary theory & criticism, and the dramatic arts.

 

Book and Journal Collections

Ebook Central
A vast collection of ebooks, with the ability to request ebooks not already held by UEA.

JSTOR Arts and Sciences
Collection of journal articles and other content. Note that JSTOR primarily contains older articles and that all these articles can also be found alongside more current articles via Library Search.

Project Muse - Arts and Humanities Collection
Collection of journal articles. Note that all these articles can also be found via Library Search.

Periodical Archive Online
Collection of journal articles. Note that PAO contains older articles and that all these articles can also be found alongside more current articles via Library Search.

TheatreVoice
Collection of audio and video recordings featuring UK theatre journalists and practitioners.

Shakespeare on Film, Television and Radio
Database documenting Shakespeare-related content in film, television and radio from around the world. Many of these recordings are available through the Box of Broadcasts database (see above).

Shakespeare Survey Online
Publishes essays devoted to Shakespeare Studies and productions.

Shakespeare Quartos Archive
Digital collection of published editions of Shakespeare’s plays before 1642 (when theatres were closed).

Cambridge edition of the works of Ben Johnson
 A searchable version of the seven-volume print edition of Johnson's works.

Internet Broadway Database (IBDB)
Detailed information about all Broadway productions. 

Eugene O'Neil Archive
A large digital archive of O'Neil's works including play texts, recordings and bibliographies.
