Our primary aim is to support students and staff of the University in all areas of their study and research. We are also able to provide access to some of our services for local individual researchers and members of the local community where appropriate, including former UEA staff and graduates.

The information below is for members of the public who wish to make use of Library facilities at the University of East Anglia including an entitlement to borrowing.

We also have information for visitors if you only wish to visit the Library on a reference basis and not borrow materials.

 

Please note that applications may take up to two weeks to be processed.

 

Applying for External Borrowing

UEA Graduates & Former UEA Staff

External membership may be approved on receipt of:

  • A completed application form: V2b application form

  • For first time applicants only- Staff: supporting evidence of employment at UEA from the HR department; Graduates - year of graduation, student number or confirmation from the Alumni Office

  • Supporting photographic evidence of proof of identity and current address to be seen on application

  • A recent photograph (or one may be taken at the Library Helpdesk on application)

  • If applicable, the membership fee is payable on collection of your card after your application has been approved.

 

Any Other Applicant from the Local Community (teachers, state pension / benefit holders or local researchers)

External membership may be approved on receipt of:

  • A completed application form: V2c application form

  • A supporting letter as to why you wish to use UEA library. This must be addressed to the Library User Services Manager.

  • Proof of application status - see application form for further details

  • A recent photograph (or one may be taken at the Library Helpdesk on application)

  • The membership fee is payable on collection of your card after your application has been approved.

Membership of UEA library is at the discretion of the Library User Services Manager and will be considered on an individual basis. For further information on the criteria which may prevent membership being accepted, please see details on your application form. Please be aware that membership is granted on an annual basis only.

Former UEA Staff with over 15 years continuous service are now able to join the 3 Year Access Only scheme. Further details are available at Access Only

External membership of UEA Library entitles the user to borrow Standard Loan items from the Main Library Collection and CDs from the CD Music Library (i.e. excluding items in the High Demand Collection, DVD Library, Reference material and 7-Day Loans). There is also no access to Interlending Services. Further information is available at entitlements and loan periods.

UEA HSC, PHA or MED Students on placement

If you are a UEA HSC, PHA or MED Student wishing to use any of the following Libraries while on placement, please complete a V7 form and hand it to UEA Library staff.

To be supported by UEA library as part of this access scheme you will need to:
 
  • Be registered as a 'current' UEA student (not intercalating, withdrawn from or completed your studies)
  • Be considered to be in good standing with UEA library
  • Be able to provide a valid UEA email address for all correspondence
 
Provided that you meet the above criteria you should be eligible to join other NHS Libraries and we will send them your approved application for processing.
 
 

Norwich Biosciences Institute Staff and Research Postgraduates

If you are staff member or Research Postgraduate at Norwich Bioscience Institutes you can access UEA Library as an External Borrower by filling out a V2E form.  This should be handed to staff at the Norwich Bioscience Institutes Library, and once approved it will be sent to us for processing.  We will then aim to make your card within 5-10 working days.  As a user of UEA Library you will be entitled to the following;
 
  • 20 item loan limit that can be made up from: Standard Loans (3 return dates per year; up to 4 renewals as long as item has not been requested; items are subject to recall), 7 Day Loans (up to 8 renewals as long as item has not been requested) and DVDs (for academic use only; up to 3 items at time; non-renewable)
  • Visitor PC login; available each day for access to free online journals.
  • Coin-Operated Black & White Photocopiers
  • Library Catalogue PCs

Visitor access to electronic resources

This visitor access service enables visitors to UEA Library access to a limited range of electronic resources, dependent on the terms of our licensing agreement. 

There are public access PCs to provide visitors and external borrowers with access to the Library Catalogue / UEA Library Search to be able to find library materials.

Please be aware that apart from the Visitor Access Service mentioned above access to electronic resources and to IT facilities is available only to members of the University.
