Each School has a Local Support Office made up of a School Manager, Head of School's PA and a number of administrative staff. Faculty Managers oversee the work of the School Local Support Office. The roles of local support staff vary depending on the specific requirements of the School but in general staff are responsible for all School-specific administration i.e. administrative and/or secretarial support to academic and senior administrative staff, School resources & financial matters, assistance with recruitment and staff management processes, management of producing exam papers and support for module information on Blackboard.

Local Support provision may include the following

For students:

  • Support LTS regarding welcome and induction meetings
  • Directing students to appropriate services
  • Support for Staff:Student Liaison Committees and appointment of student representatives
  • Support for ‘buddying’ or other mentoring schemes, support for year in industry, field courses and PQ CPD (where offered)
  • Responsibility for student post/pigeon-holes/lockers
  • Arrangements for uniforms (where provided)
  • School social events
  • Arranging appointments with Advisers etc.

For staff:

  • Support for Deans and Heads of School, including the development of Faculty/School plans
  • Strategic overview and operational management of space (except where there is operational management by technical staff e.g. in some Science Schools)
  • Strategic overview of Faculty/School finances
  • Budget construction, overview and management
  • Financial transactions in accordance with financial procedures
  • Support for staff appointment, induction, probation, appraisal, mentoring (where appropriate), peer observation of teaching, promotion, sabbatical, annual, sickness and other leave
  • Administrative support for appointment of Associate Tutors/Graduate Teaching Assistants where appropriate
  • PSRB registration checks
  • Preparation of and support for workload allocations
  • PA support for Deans and Heads of School
  • Secretarial/clerical support for faculty appropriate to the number of staff providing support and the number of staff requiring support
  • Preparation of examination papers, including liaison with external examiners
  • Committee support including Faculty Executive, School Board, Promotions Committee,
  • Ethics Committee and any other Committee [EXCLUDING: Boards of Examiners/Progress Boards; Faculty Learning, Teaching and Quality Committees ; Faculty Research and Enterprise Committees; any committees relating to attendance, engagement and progress, discipline (including plagiarism/collusion and/or PMU cases)
  • Health and Safety overview (except where there are specialist requirements managed by other staff, e.g. technicians)
  • Assistance with DPA/FoIA/EIR and copyright requests
  • Maintenance and update of School/Faculty websites and portal and Virtual Learning Environments (including Blackboard except where the Blackboard site is integral to administration undertaken by the Learning and Teaching Service) liaising with service areas as appropriate and maintaining notice boards
  • Oversight, management, maintenance and update of School/Faculty filing systems
  • Ad hoc room bookings
  • Support for academic conferences.
  • Directing academic and research staff in the School to appropriate services.
