Create discussion board

Select the relevant module from MY MODULES in Blackboard Learn

Select the + button at the top left of the menu and select Tool Link

Enter a name for the menu button and select Discussion Board from the Type drop-down list

Tick the Available to Users box

Click Submit


Creating a Forum

Within discussion boards, instructors can create forums to discuss specific topics.

Select Discussion Board from the Module menu, then Create Forum

Enter a name for the Forum and a description

By default the Forum is set to be available. Set dates restrictions if applicable

Update Forum settings as appropriate

Click Submit


Creating/Linking to a Discussion Board from a Content Area

You can link to a discussion board, or create a new discussion board, from within any content area by selecting Tools and selecting Discussion Board from the drop down menu


Use a discussion board

The Discussion Board is a tool for sharing thoughts and ideas about class materials. Course members can replicate the robust discussions that take place in the traditional classroom. An advantage of using the Discussion Board is its asynchronous nature. Participants do not need to be in the same location or time zone, and can take time to consider their responses carefully.

You can use the Discussion Board for the following tasks:

  1. Meet with your peers for collaboration and social interaction
  2. Pose questions about homework assignments, readings, and course content
  3. Demonstrate your understanding or application of course material


How to Access the Discussion Board

On the course menu, click Discussions or on the course menu, click Tools and click Discussion Board

The main Discussion Board page appears with a list of available discussion forums

A forum is an area where users discuss a topic or a group of related topics

Click a forum thread title to view the messages. Forum threads in bold contain unread posts

You can view data on the number of posts and participants

Click the number in the Unread Posts column for one-click access to a forum's unread messages

Course groups can have their own Discussion Boards. Group Discussion Boards are available only to users who are members of the group. If a group Discussion Board is available, access it from the groups link on the course menu or in the My Groups area.


Subscribe to a discussion board

The Subscribe option within the Discussion Board settings, allows students or instructors to receive an email alert when new postings are posted in a forum or thread

The email could include the body of the post or just provide a link to the post, depending on the settings selected

Select the relevant module from MY MODULES in Blackboard Learn

Select the Discussion board from the menu

Click on Create Forum or click Edit from the contextual menu (down arrow) next to an existing Forum.

The Add Forum or Modify Forum page appears

Within Forum Settings choose one of the following options:

  • Allow members to subscribe to threads – use this option to restrict subscriptions to specific threads
  • Allow members to subscribe to forum – use this option to allow subscriptions to all threads within a forum

Choose from one of the following options:

  • Include body of post in the email – use this option to include the message text in the email notification and a link to reply to the message
  • Include link to post – use this option to include a link to the message in the email notification

Click Submit


Subscribe to a discussion forum

Open the discussion forum and click on the Subscribe button at the top of the Forum. If you are already subscribed, you can unsubscribe in the same way
