Android

Connecting to the VPN from an Android mobile device uses the 'F5 Access' app. Go to the Google Play Store on your device and search for ‘F5 Access'. Install the application. 

Once in the app, configure a new connection to connect to the server https://vpn.uea.ac.uk and ensure you tick the ‘Web Logon’ check box.

The app may prompt you to allow Administrator access to your phone, which you will have to accept.

When you connect to the VPN you will be presented with the UEA Web Login – the same as if using the desktop client.

Enter your UEA credentials to login to the VPN.

Disconnecting 

When you’re finished using the VPN it’s important to remember to disconnect.

Open the VPN again and click the profile name to disconnect.

 

iOS

Connecting to the VPN from an iOS device uses the 'F5 Access' app. Go to the App Store on your device and search for ‘F5 Access for iOS’. Install the application. 

Once in the app, tap Add New configuration, enter the server https://vpn.uea.ac.uk and ensure you tick the ‘Web Logon’ check box.

 

Tap Save.

 

Tap the Connection slider on you’ll be presented with the UEA Web Login – the same as if using the desktop client.

Enter your UEA credentials to login to the VPN.

 

Disconnecting 

When you’re finished using the VPN it’s important to remember to disconnect.

Open the VPN again and click the profile name to disconnect.

 

Linux

Many of today’s most popular Internet browsers now block the technology that clientless SSL VPN's used to provide a network connection onto the corporate network. For this reason IT Services recommend installing and using the BIG-IP Edge Client to gain access to the UEA VPN. The process is quick and simple and provides a greater user experience once setup. 

First time use

UEA Linux Desktop users: the software is already installed, so you can skip ahead to 'Connecting via the CLI Edge Client' further down the page.

To download and install the BIG-IP Edge Client you’ll need to connect to the VPN homepage, where the install files are available for you to download.

Open your favourite Internet browser and browse to https://vpn.uea.ac.uk

You’ll now be redirected to a standard UEA Authentication screen – if you’ve logged onto Office 365 then this may look familiar to you.

Enter your UEA credentials in the format username@uea.ac.uk and click ‘Sign in’ to continue.

You’ll now be logged into the VPN homepage where you can download the Edge Client. Select 'F5 CLI Client (Linux)'.

Once you have downloaded the file BIGIPLinux_sslvpn.tgz extract the files to a local directory.

Run the install script Install.sh under the root account.

The following text appears when installation is complete:

  • f5fpc is installed in /usr/local/bin
  • Please check f5fpc --help command to get started
  • Uninstaller located in /usr/local/lib/F5Networks/uninstall_F5.sh

Connecting via the CLI Edge Client

With the client installed you can connect to the VPN.

Open a CLI prompt

Type f5fpc -s -t https://vpn.uea.ac.uk/ -x

When prompted enter your username (enter your username without any prefix or suffix e.g abc15xyznot uea/abc15xyz or abc15xyz@uea.ac.uk), followed by your password.

The following text will appear:

  • Operation in progress
  • Please check back the status with f5fpc –-info

After a few seconds, entering f5fpc –-info should show Connection Status: session established followed by your connection details.

Disconnecting

When you’re finished using the VPN it’s important to remember to disconnect.

Open a CLI prompt

Type f5fpc –o

This will disconnect you cleanly from the VPN

 

Mac OS

To download and install the BIG-IP Edge Client you’ll need to connect to the VPN homepage, where the install files are available for you to download.

Open your favourite Internet browser and browse to https://vpn.uea.ac.uk

You’ll now be redirected to a standard UEA Authentication screen – if you’ve logged onto Office 365 then this may look familiar to you.

Enter your UEA credentials in the format username@uea.ac.uk and click ‘Sign in’ to continue.

You’ll now be logged into the VPN homepage where you can download the Edge Client. Select the 'F5 Edge (Mac)' option.

Install the 'mac_edgesvpn.pkg' found in the 'BIGIPMacEdgeClient' folder in your downloads folder. 

Once installed the Edge Client can be found under the Applications list.

Connecting via the Edge Client

With the client installed you can now connect to the VPN.

Launch the Edge Client.

Click ‘Add New Server’ and enter https://vpn.uea.ac.uk

Verify the server and Add it to your server list.

Click 'Connect' and the Edge Client will connect to the VPN where you’ll be prompted for your username and password. Enter your username in the format username@uea.ac.uk

Scroll down the window and click ‘Sign in’

The client minimises to the menu bar and you should now be connected to the VPN.

Disconnecting

When you’re finished using the VPN it’s important to remember to disconnect.

Open the client – using the status menu in the menu bar.

Click Disconnect.

 

Windows

Windows BIG IP Edge Client Connection

Many of today’s most popular Internet browsers now block the technology that clientless SSL VPN's used to provide a network connection onto the corporate network. For this reason IT Services recommend installing and using the BIG-IP Edge Client to gain access to the UEA VPN. The process is quick and simple and provides a greater user experience once setup. 

Windows 8/10 Users: Whilst there is an ‘App’ within the Windows Store for the F5 VPN, this will not allow you to authenticate against the UEA login servers. Please install the F5 Edge Client as described below.

First time use

To download and install the BIG-IP Edge Client you’ll need to connect to the VPN homepage, where the install files are available for you to download.

Open your favourite Internet browser and browse to https://vpn.uea.ac.uk 

You’ll now be redirected to a standard UEA Authentication screen – if you’ve logged onto Office 365 then this may look familiar to you.

Enter your UEA credentials in the format username@uea.ac.uk and click Sign in to continue.

You’ll now be logged into the VPN homepage where you can download the Edge Client. Select the Win option.

Once you have downloaded the client installer simply run it to install the client. This will require Administrator level access.

If you are using a UEA Managed Windows device the installer can also be installed from the software catalogue. Please see the appendix of this guide for more information about running the VPN client from a UEA Managed Device

Once your client is installed, you no longer need to log into the VPN webpage to gain access to the VPN

Once the Edge Client is installed you can find it directly in your start menu, called BIG-IP Edge Client.

Connecting via the Edge Client

With the client installed you can now connect to the VPN.

  1. Launch the Edge Client.
  2. The server details should already be populated in the client as UEA VPN, however, if you need them then enter https://vpn.uea.ac.uk 
  3. Click Connect and the client will present you with the same login screen as when connecting to the webpage.
  4. Enter your UEA credentials and click Sign in to continue.
  5. The client minimises to the system tray and you should now be connected to the VPN.

Disconnecting

When you’re finished using the VPN it’s important to remember to disconnect.

  1. Open the client again – found in the system tray.
  2. Click Disconnect.

Appendix

Connecting from a UEA Managed Device

When connecting from a UEA Windows laptop it may be necessary to switch off Integrated Authentication in Internet Explorer otherwise the edge client won’t be able to connect:

  1. Open Internet Options from within Internet Explorer.
  2. Open the Advanced tab.
  3. Scroll down to Enable Integrated Windows Authentication and untick.
  4. Restart your computer.

 

Windows Mobile

Connecting to the VPN from a Windows Mobile device uses the 'F5 Access' app. Go to the Microsoft App Store on your device and search for ‘F5 Access’. Install the application. 

Once the app is installed it will enable you to connect to the VPN through the native Windows Phone VPN settings. Opening the app simply tells you this information.

Open the main Windows Phone settings and find VPN under the Network & Wireless settings.

Click the plus symbol at the bottom of the screen to add a new connection profile.

Enter the following details:

  • Server name: vpn.uea.ac.uk
  • Type: F5 BIG-IP Edge Client
  • Username: UEA username (without an @uea.ac.uk or UEA\)
  • Password: UEA password
  • Connect automatically: Off

Click Save.

To connect to the VPN, click the profile name.

Open the VPN again and click the profile name to disconnect.
