- The schedule of events for 2015/16 will be uploaded later this year -
Chemistry & Pharmacy have been holders in the past of the prestigious and fiercely contested Ziggurat Challenge Trophy for the most sporting school at UEA.
In order to widen participation even further within the school, and in an unashamed effort to retain the trophy, we are looking for volunteers to assist the sports reps in organising teams for the twenty individual events in the Ziggurat Challenge.
What is it?
The Ziggurat Challenge is a ‘recreational-level’ programme of tournaments open to all students, staff and faculty of the University and the Norwich Research Park.
The programme has been designed to promote enjoyable participation in the spirit of sporting competition as well as encourage some friendly interaction/rivalry between schools. Participants compete for their school of study; those in departments not directly linked to a school may attach themselves to one of their choice or compete for the UEA Staff team for the duration of the programme. (This may vary each year).
Who can take part?
Any student, alumni, member of staff or faculty, (including Norwich Research Park based staff) can compete in the Ziggurat Challenge. What’s more it’s FREE*!!! You can take part in, or spectate at, every event this year and pay absolutely nothing (*60p entry if not a cardholder). We value your participation more than your money, so no excuses, just turn up and join in.
What sports does it involve?
21 different events including: ~ Football, Volleyball, Table-Tennis, Netball, Badminton, Swimming, Fun Run/Stroll around the Broad, Climbing, Korfball, Racquetball, Ultimate Frisbee, Rounders, Orienteering, Touch Rugby, Archery, Tug-o-War and Athletics.
Scoring points and playing the joker?
Schools receive points that contribute towards their standing just by getting a team together and taking part. Bonus points are then added based on how well the team performs. The same scoring system applies to all the events except for the last one – Athletics; where the points are doubled.
When the Head of your school participates 8 bonus points are added per event.
5 bonus points can be gained when the HOS comes along to spectate.
Schools have 2 jokers to play during the course of the competition, these may be placed on any event (*that has 10 entries or more) Playing the ‘Joker’ will double the Ziggurat points for that event.
How do I get involved?
Each School has an academic department sports rep (ideally each school will have a male and a female for each year of study) who receives information about the next event and the results of each event. They are responsible for putting together a team for each event by electing a captain for each sport. The sports reps do a very important job and need your support. Without their voluntary efforts the competition will struggle to function. You will be able to find out who your academic department sports rep is by lLooking on the University Student notice board in the Sportspark or contacting Rachel Tomes – Assistant Director Student Sport, e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
The CHE and PHA reps will be posted here later in the year when they have been chosen.
