Spandrel Panel remediation trial programme
Starting Monday 3 February a trial will begin to assess the impact of a programme of works to install fixings to the spandrel panels which form the external façade of the Lasdun Teaching Wall.
This follows works in autumn 2019 to protect a number of entrances across the Lasdun Teaching Wall and provide access to the Arts, Chemistry, Sciences and Biology buildings in the event of high winds.
The first phase of the programme comprises the installation of scaffolding external to the North-facing elevation of the Arts building (see below image - larger version available here).
The first phase will take place for a two week period, with an anticipated completion date of Friday 14 February. During this period there will be intermittent noise (drilling) disruption as the scaffolding is installed to the North-facing elevation of Arts.
From Monday 17 February the next phase will begin. This will include bracket installation undertaken at pre-defined locations on the North-facing elevation of the Arts building.
This work will be carried out during normal University hours Monday to Friday and significant noise disruption is to be expected for both occupants of Arts and buildings in close proximity.
From Monday 24 February, a further phase of bracket installation will be undertaken to pre-defined locations on the North-facing elevation of the Arts building.
This work will be permitted outside the hours of 09:00 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 16:00. There may be significant noise disruption to occupants of Arts and buildings in close proximity outside of these stated times.
Access and contractor compound
As part of these works, there will a number of contractor compounds (further detail is provided in the links below):
- Area by the Founders Green cycle parking. This will involve closure to part of the pedestrian footway around Founders Green. As part of the closures a limited number of bicycle loops will be unavailable. There is further cycle storage provision on the ramped access adjacent to Arts 2. This compound has now been removed.
- Area by the Arts Post Room loading bay. This will involve re-routing part of the existing accessible route around the Arts Post Room loading bay. 1 Accessible parking bay (closest to the Arts teaching wing) will be temporarily unavailable Friday 31 January - Monday 3 February (indicated in the map above). This compound has now been removed.
- Area adjacent to the Chemistry building motorcycle parking including pathway will also be used by the contractors.
Trial works are anticipated to be completed by Monday 2 March.
As part of works to enable greater access to buildings which comprise the Lasdun Wall, protection of the Arts 1 entrance (opposite Restaraunt building) will be carried out Friday 31 January - Sunday 2 February.
