I face a crisis! Since the 1960s I have been (in one way or another) a 'classroom researcher'. But for the last fifteen years I have worked outside classrooms, as a distance educator, increasingly teaching, not in rooms at all but in various virtual spaces. So I often find myself in cyberplaces, in which the notion of the 'classroom', and all that it implies, becomes increasingly problematic.
My role at UEA is to teach and research in the area of 'Higher Education practice'. This means that I deal both with the practicalities of day-to-day teaching in lecture theatres, seminars and on web sites, and am pulled into the growing debates about research, teaching and curriculum and the very idea of the university in a time of change. It is a heady mix!
