We’re looking to gather a group of current UEA students to meet one-to-one on a weekly basis with Year 9 pupils in a local school, encouraging them to consider going to university in the future. Conversations will range from sharing your experience of choosing a course, to passing on top tips for study and time management.
The scheme will run weekly in schools from January - May 2018. There will be breaks during half term (12th - 16th February) and Easter holidays (29th March - 13th April), and the scheme will finish with a celebration event on campus on Wednesday 16th May.
As a mentor, you will develop a set of core skills that are highly sought after by employers, including
- excellent communication skills
- effective questioning
- active listening skills
- experience liaising with a variety of people (including teachers, young people, UEA staff)
- time management
- problem solving skills
- ability to motivate and inspire others
You will also have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of young people from this region. As a mentor, you will act as a role model for the students you meet, listening to them, establishing good rapport and supporting them as they begin to make decisions about their future. It's an exciting job and a huge privilege.
And if any further incentive were needed, we should also mention that this is a paid role. See the job description for more details.
Applications to the Mentoring Scheme have closed for this academic year. We'll be recruiting again for 2018-19 - do check back in the summer for further details.
For those who have applied, you'll receive an email shortly with next steps.
All mentors must complete a Disclosure and Barring Service check, unless already held by the Student Ambassador Scheme. The cost of the DBS check will be met by the mentor, but will be offset by a one off payment for attending the training. Mentors will only be placed once full training is completed.
