Ceremony running order Ceremony running order

Students with order of ceremony

- Each Congregation ceremony commences with the Academic Procession entering the hall to processional music performed by the London Gabrieli Brass Ensemble.

- The procession is led by the Chancellor, Karen Jones, CBE, or the Vice-Chancellor, Professor David Richardson, BSc, PhD, followed by members of academic staff and senior officers of the University.

- The presiding officer opens the ceremony. The Head of each School then presents each candidate by name, before they cross the platform to be congratulated by the presiding officer.

- Honorary degrees are awarded to persons of distinction, both locally and internationally. A senior member of the University takes the role of Public Orator to present each of them to the Congregation, before the presiding officer makes their award.

- Senior academics who retire may be granted the title of Emeritus Professor or Reader Emeritus by the University, in recognition of a distinguished career. The presiding officer makes a brief appreciation of their contribution to the University before they are presented with the award.

- After the ceremony the Academic and Graduate Processions, followed by the guests, leave the hall to processional music.
