A communications plan is in place at the University to cover emergencies and crises. This includes an emergency text system, to be used to contact staff and students in the event of an emergency.
While students are automatically enrolled in the system when they join the University, staff need to opt-in to receive alerts to their personal mobile phones.
To sign up to the system, text staff_emergency to 07950 080906. This text will cost you one standard network rate message, or may be free of charge if your calling plan includes free texts. Receiving texts from UEA in an emergency will be free.
It is recommended that you save 07950 080906 into your mobile phone contacts as ‘UEA Emergency’, so you will instantly recognise who the texts are from. Staff can leave the scheme at any time by texting stop_staff to 07950 080906.
The premise of the system is that it will only be used to communicate in an emergency – something that affects the majority of staff and students, for example a fire or bomb threat on campus, campus being closed/inaccessible, etc.
The system would be used for information purposes, and would be used in conjunction with other communications channels as set out in the University's crisis communications plan.
